Improving Battery Performance Using Optislang Based Model Calibration of Newman P2d Model

The efficiency of Li-ion 21700 class cells is studied under various electrochemical, thermal, and geometrical properties. An advanced automated workflow was developed using Newman P2D model and Non-Linear Programming by Quadratic Lagrangian (NLPQL) algorithm. Using this workflow, optimized set of battery design parameters were estimated. With the optimized parameters, the cell performance was validated against the test data [7]. The effect of discharge rates 0.5C, 1C, 2C and 3C on battery electrochemical and thermal behavior was studied. The critical parameters considered in this study are Maximum Solid Li+ concentration, Stoichiometry at 0% and 100%, Reference rate constant at both the positive and negative electrodes of the battery. The effect of tab configuration on potential loss analysed, results showed that with continuous tab potential loss is very less compared to single- and double-tab configurations. Using this automated workflow engineers can easily and quickly size the batteries from classic 18650 to new 21700 or any other type of batteries.
