A Broadband and Wide-Angle FSS Absorber with Vertical Dipole Array

This work presented a broadband, wide-angle absorber comprising a horizontal frequency-selective surface (FSS) and a novel vertical dipole array (VDA). Conventional FSS absorbers with wide-angle absorption characteristic for TE waves exhibit poor absorption stability under oblique TM waves. By employing the VDA, the absorber provides wide-angle absorption stability under both oblique TE and TM waves. Its absorption band ranges from 1.88 to 3.91 GHz (fractional bandwidth of 70.1%) under normal incidence, and from 2.53 to 3.91 GHz (fractional bandwidth of 42.9%) when the incidence angle is raised up to 60° for both TE and TM waves, and its total thickness is $20 mm\left(0.125 \lambda_{\mathrm{L}}\right)$, where $\lambda_{\mathrm{L}}$ is the wavelength at the lowest operation frequency.
