How to Create 3D Movie Scenes in the Style of Chinese Paintings Using Computer Processing

Chinese visual elements have become increasingly prevalent in Hollywood films. These elements manifest in various forms, including unique Chinese landscapes, modern urban scenery, martial arts, traditional culture, and cuisine. Two main factors contribute to this trend. First, filmmakers incorporate Chinese elements to enrich the visual representation of their films and innovate on themes, catering to the appreciation of global audiences. Second, Western films leverage Chinese elements to resonate with Chinese audiences, gaining their favor and support, thereby successfully entering the Chinese market and generating increased box office revenue. Among the diverse visual elements, the unique Chinese landscape seems to be a favorite scene in Hollywood films as seen in movies such as “Mission: Impossible 3” (2006), “Avatar” (2009), and “Mulan” (2020), all achieving considerable box office success. Creating 3D film scenes with a Chinese painting style involves the intersection of computer graphics, artistic generation, and cultural heritage. This study outlined the methods and key steps to achieve this goal. It was needed to delve into the various styles of Chinese painting to understand their unique artistic features. Analyzing traditional paintings allows for the extraction of key visual elements, such as brushstrokes, lines, colors, and composition. In 3D production, professional modeling software including Blender, Maya, and 3ds Max was used to create scene elements, including mountains, buildings, and natural vegetation. These models were meticulously designed to reflect the painting style by mimicking hand-drawn lines or incorporating specific geometric shapes. A broad technical and artistic background was required to utilize professional modeling, rendering, and post-processing tools. Through continuous experimentation and refinement, impressive 3D film scenes with a distinct Chinese painting style were created, offering a new visual and cultural experience to the fields of filmmaking and artistic creation.
