Precision Localization of Acoustic Beacons Using Active Sonar Systems: An In-Depth Analysis

Water, which constitutes roughly 71 percent of the Earth’s surface, conceals a variety of objects, including submarines, ships, archaeological relics, mines, and various metal items within its depths. The identification of these submerged targets is invaluable but highly intricate due to the presence of numerous challenges, including environmental factors such as pressure, temperature, salinity, and attenuation phenomena like absorption, scattering, reflection, and multipath interference. Various methods exist for the identification of underwater targets, including matched filtering, remote sensing, and the utilization of sonar systems. Among these approaches, sonar systems enjoy widespread usage. A sonar system functions by emitting acoustic signals, often referred to as “pings,” into the water. These acoustic signals, typically generated by a transducer, propagate through the water as sound waves. Upon encountering an underwater object or target, a portion of the signal’s energy is reflected toward the sonar’s receiver, manifesting as an echo. In addition to target identification, sonar systems are instrumental in extracting geological features from underwater environments. This capability aids in the comprehension of phenomena such as plate movements, and underwater earthquakes, and the identification of regions prone to landslides. This paper delves into the comprehensive utilization of diverse sonar systems, including active, passive, and multi-fusion techniques along with computational and neural architecture methods, for the identification and classification of underwater targets. The paper discusses the challenges in identifying submerged objects in water, emphasizing the use of sonar systems, including active techniques.
