Role of AI-Supported Serious Simulation Games in Urban Planning Education

In the age of AI, the ways of learning and teaching have undergone significant transformations, and one of the applications of AI is evident in simulation games. Games are a good platform for AI research, as a lot of funding is provided to this sector, and there is a steady base of players with whom Al can interact. This research explores the impact of serious simulation games on urban planning education, with a focus on their ability to enhance students’ understanding of university topics and facilitate the connection between these subjects and the application of learning to solve real-world problems in a fun and serious manner in the field of urban planning. This study addresses challenges faced by urban planning students in understanding academic concepts and applying them practically, along with deficiencies in essential planning skills. The research was conducted using mixed research methods, where quantitative data was collected through a real-life experiment involving students from the Urban Planning Department participating in a serious simulation game. Qualitative data was collected through surveys and interviews with a group of urban planning instructors and professors. The data was then analyzed using descriptive statistics and SPSS. The research concludes that Serious simulation games can transform urban planning education into an immersive and experiential journey, empowering students to become proactive urban planners who can anticipate and address the complex challenges of shaping sustainable, resilient, and livable cities, all while enhancing their critical thinking skills and understanding of the real-world consequences of different planning decisions. In conclusion, the research advocates for the widespread adoption of serious simulation games in urban planning education, coupled with continuous game development and comprehensive training for both educators and students. Fostering collaboration between universities and game design experts is crucial to producing educational games tailored to student needs, ultimately enhancing the quality of urban planning education.
