Mechanical Characteristics of Insulation System Materials Characteristics for High-Voltage Generators

The stator winding insulation system of high-voltage generators requires both electrical characteristics and reliable fastening. Electrical insulating composite materials used must possess adequate mechanical characteristics to prevent stator winding movement, vibration sparking, and slot discharges, which degrade the insulation system. Different composite materials with varying polymer matrices and fillers are used based on the level of operational impacts. The main mechanical effect is compression of the material due to electromagnetic forces between the stator winding elements. This study compares materials with hot and cold curing epoxy matrix and different fillers. By analyzing the mechanical characteristics of insulating materials under compressive loads at different temperatures and component ratios, recommendations can be provided for selecting materials for the stator winding insulation system of high-voltage generators under various mechanical stresses and operating temperatures.
