Application of Energy Storage Devices for Increasing Transient Stability of Long-Distance Interconnections

Application of battery energy storage systems (BESS) to increase transient stability and Boguchanskaya hydro power plant (HPP) capacity is substantiated in simplified model of Siberian energy pool. It is shown that power output of the plant is limited by conditions of ensuring stability, in normal conditions, 8 of 9 generators of Boguchanskaya HPP are in operation with capacity limit of 2202 MW. Based on the system response to emergency situations, possible options for using energy storage systems to increase transient stability and output power of Boguchanskaya HPP are proposed. With correct BESS configuration (optimal switching time and capacity), an improvement in system behavior is observed mutual angles between generators and their acceleration area decreases, whereas transient stability margin growths. As a result, damping increases by 2-3 times, and restrictions on output power of the plant are also removed.
