The Investigation of Effect of a Multi-Chamber Arrester Mechanical Properties on the Efficiency of Arc Extinction

Multi-chamber arresters are successfully used for lightning protection of power transmission lines of different voltage classes. Due to the significant complexity of developing and testing prototypes, increasing attention is being paid to the use of numerical modeling methods in the design of new devices. The approaches to modeling arresters used so far have not taken into account the influence of mechanical deformation. This work is devoted to the development of a model of an arc discharge in a multi-chamber arrester, taking into account the change in the shape of the discharge chamber under the influence of a plasma jet. Analysis of preliminary calculation results obtained for a current pulse of 20 kA confirms that the new model can more accurately describe the combustion of the discharge.
