Evaluation of Short Circuit Current due to Wind Farm Interconnection to Selayar Island Power System

The assessment of the short circuit fault current serves as a valuable metric for evaluating the potential benefits or drawbacks associated with the integration of a new power plant into the existing power system. The augmentation of short circuit fault current levels can be attributed to the incorporation of new power plants. Furthermore, the magnitude of the short circuit fault current is influenced by the specific configuration of the electric power system employed. Excessive short circuit currents have the potential to inflict harm onto electrical equipment, such as circuit breakers and relays, inside the electric power system. The occurrence of this damage can be attributed to a lack of alignment between the specifications of the circuit breaker and relay, and the settings and short circuit fault current standards. The objective of this study was to assess the alterations in the short circuit current inside the electrical system of Selayar Island subsequent to its connectivity with 3 MW wind farms. The utilisation of the Selayar Island electric power system is motivated by the prevailing circumstances on the island, which entail an insufficiency of electrical power to cater to the demands of various electrical loads. Consequently, the incorporation of renewable energy sources, such as wind farms, becomes imperative. The approach section incorporates multiple scenarios to assess variations in short circuit current. In this scenario, we aim to simulate the short circuit current in the power system of Selayar Island prior to its integration with the wind farms. In Scenario 2, the objective is to simulate the short circuit current of the electricity system on Selayar Island following its integration with the wind farms. In Scenario 3, the objective is to decrease the short circuit current by implementing Fault Current Limiting (FCL) techniques. This is done to ensure that the short circuit current aligns with the prescribed specifications and settings of the circuit breaker and relay.
