Hardware Prototyping of Handwritten Character Recognition using VEGA Soft Core Processor

In this paper, we propose the design and implementation of a hardware prototype system to recognise handwritten English alphabets using a multi-layer perceptron network (MLP). The proposed system is based on the indigenous soft core VEGA processor, which runs on a field programmable gate array (FPGA). The system is able to accurately recognise upper and lower case English alphabets. A detailed analysis of the system architecture and hardware is also presented.
