Continuous Electrochemical Glucose Detection Using Ferrocene Carboxylic Acid Chemistry

Continuous glucose monitoring is necessary to minimize glycemic fluctuations and improve the quality of life of diabetic individuals by providing them with real-time glucose variations in response to diet, lifestyle, and medications. Herein, we focus on developing a three-electrode electrochemical system with optimized sensing chemistry for continuous glucose monitoring applications. We designed a test setup to ensure a constant flow of the analyte and mimic glucose diffusion in the interstitial space. We fabricated platinum electrodes using a one-step, conventional microfabrication process and tested their suitability for electrochemical sensing. The study demonstrates a proof-of-concept continuous glucose sensor capable of monitoring glucose levels in vitro for up to 7 days, with a minimal impact from interference molecules.
