On Transmission Time of a LoRa Packet in a LoRa-Based IoT System for Underground Environment

Long range (LoRa) technology offers a potential solution for building internet of things (IoT) networks for underground environments. Offering large coverage distance with low power consumption is the key feature of the LoRa network that has been exploited in designing IoT network for underground environments. But a trade-off exists between the coverage distance and the transmission time of the LoRa packet that must be considered, otherwise, the performance of the LoRa network may be degraded. LoRa network supports variable spreading factor (SF) which controls the network performance such as coverage distance, transmission time, data rate etc. The present work presents a simulated study on the transmission time of the LoRa packet with variable SF. The study is important in designing the LoRa-based IoT network with desired coverage distance and network delay for the underground environment.
