Graphene based piezoresistive pressure sensor for structural health monitoring

Highly precise and accurate strain sensors are the requirements for structural health monitoring. The excellent mechanical and piezoresistive properties of graphene enables to achieve these requirements. In the current work we present the experimental and simulation results of graphene based piezoresistive sensor. The simulation of graphene based piezoresistive sensor on concrete is done using the COMSOL software followed by experimental evaluations. In the COMSOL simulation, we were able to optimise a micrometer sized device with a sensing pressure in the range of 0 to 0.01 N. The graphene based sensor will enable to monitor a wide range of pressure generated from the systems. In practical implementation, the Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis of graphene sheet is carried out and the variation of its resistance with applied pressure is measured.
