Identification of Individual from Group Photo Using Face Recognition

In today's digital world, the prevalence of group photos in the realm of photography and social media is unquestionable. Identifying specific individuals within these group images, particularly in larger gatherings, presents a notable challenge. Addressing this challenge, computer vision, a technology enabling computers to interpret images, has been employed to develop an intelligent system capable of accurately detecting and recognizing individuals within group photos. This system serves a versatile purpose, finding applications in various contexts, including event photography, surveillance, and social media tagging. It offers an automated and efficient solution, leveraging cutting-edge algorithms and machine learning techniques to simplify a process that would otherwise be intricate and manual. The literature review conducted as part of this project underscores the significance of face recognition and the extraction of faces from group photos. Consideration of factors like facial expressions and pose has emerged as pivotal in improving the accuracy of recognition. Techniques such as skin detection algorithms and the Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) have been employed to achieve face detection and feature extraction. The methodology for this project involves the utilization of essential tools such as Python, OpenCV, Face Recognition, and Tkinter. This process is depicted in a comprehensive flowchart, encompassing the steps of loading the photo, encoding known faces, comparing these encodings to ascertain matches, and framing the matched faces. The results obtained in this research affirm the efficacy of the system in accurately identifying individuals, even under challenging conditions characterized by obscured faces, varying poses, and diverse lighting conditions. The system's potential applications are far-reaching, promising enhanced efficiency in event management, augmented security through advanced surveillance, and improved user experiences on social media platforms, particularly in the domain of tagging.
