In-circuit Resistive Components for Temperature Sensing Application

In-circuit components are usually sensitive to physical parameters such as temperature. Hence, some components can be employed for sensing applications if characterized and calibrated appropriately. In this direction, this paper showed the response of resistive in-circuit components under temperature response. Various configurations were characterized to understand the temperature response. For this purpose, low-cost carbon resistor-based circuits were used. Three circuit configurations were fabricated, namely series combination of resistors, parallel combination of resistors and series-parallel combination of resistors. These circuits were characterized under temperatures between 40°C and ~110°C. An alteration of around 75°C resulted in a maximum response of 4% from the in-circuit sensors. Further, the sensitivity of the series-parallel combination (0.0054%/°C) was found to be ~30% higher than the series (0.0041%/°C) and parallel (0.0039%/°C) combination. This approach will help in miniaturization of sensing systems.
