Assessing and Mitigating Aggregate Interference with Real-Time Spectral Brokering

Continued consumption of the radio frequency spectrum poses a number of challenges to wireless services and technologies whose performance is dependent on available bandwidth and low-noise environments. Passive RF systems in particular are at risk of experiencing the effects of a more crowded spectral environment due to their extreme sensitivity. International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recommendations specify limits on unwanted emissions, but many of the sharing and compatibility studies that informed the ITU on its decision give little to no consideration to the effects of aggregate interference. Expanding access to additional spectrum for active wireless services while improving protections for passive services by assessing aggregate interference is desirable but challenging due to the extremely low tolerances of devices observing in passive bands and the timescales at which fifth-generation (5G) wireless devices operate at.
