High-Performance Slotted Patch Crossovers for RF Applications

Crossovers are specialized devices that facilitate the transmission of signals while eliminating the need for incorporating three-dimensional structures that are not in a planar arrangement. By integrating patch crossovers into Radio Frequency (RF) systems, the overall configuration becomes simplified, resulting in cost savings and ease of manufacturing. The current body of literature presents a distinctive, efficient, yet straightforward methodology for the design and development of RF Slotted Patch Crossovers (SPCs) with enhanced performance characteristics. By introducing rectangular slots into the existing reported crossovers, various benefits are stimulated such as enhanced isolation, size reduction, reduced insertion loss, and improved impedance matching. This manuscript elucidates an augmentation approach, which is equally applicable for a variety of patch crossovers, including configurations such as squares, circles, and hexagons. Additionally, a parametric analysis has been conducted to assess the impact of varying various design parameters in different crossover configurations. The optimized design of presented SPC, improves the isolation from $-15 \mathrm{~dB}$ to $30 \mathrm{~dB}$ and the patch area is reduced by 33 percent compared to their non slotted counterparts.
