Wideband Microstrip Patch Antenna Loaded with Double J-Shaped Slots for Sub-6 GHz Applications

This paper presents a wideband microstrip patch antenna (MPA). The antenna consists of double J-shaped slots loaded on the patch and a partial ground plane. The wideband characteristic is obtained by using the J-shaped slots. The effect of structural parameters such as the width and the location of slots on the antenna performance is investigated. This antenna is constructed to operate at 3.5 GHz with a $10-\text{dB}$ fractional bandwidth (FBW) of $70.8 \%(2.53 \text{GHz}$ to $5.3 \text{GHz})$, radiation efficiency better than $90 \%$, and gain of 2.62 dBi. The antenna has a size of $45 \text{mm} \times 41 \text{mm}\left(0.88 \lambda_{\text{g}} \times 0.81 \lambda_{\text{g}}\right)$. The proposed antenna is suitable for WiMAX and sub- $6 \text{GHz} 5 \text{G}$ applications primarily for smartphones, access points, and IoT devices.
