A 124-202 GHz Compact Wideband Sub-THz On-Chip Monopole Antenna Using Split Ring Resonators in 65 nm CMOS Process

A co-planar waveguide (CPW) fed wideband sub-THz on-chip monopole antenna is designed using a commercial 65 nm CMOS process. Initially, a standalone monopole antenna is designed at a center frequency of 150 GHz. The impedance bandwidth of the standalone monopole antenna is 48 GHz. Two square split-ring resonators (SRRs) are introduced to improve the impedance bandwidth. The SRRs are magnetically coupled to the monopole and are used as the radiating elements. A 30 GHz impedance bandwidth improvement is made using the proposed method compared to a standalone monopole antenna. The simulated impedance bandwidth of the proposed on-chip antenna is 78 GHz, which covers frequencies between 124-202 GHz. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first time SRRs have been used in the on-chip antenna environment for bandwidth enhancement.
