Computer Aided Design of Low Chirp 32W Pulsed IMPATT Oscillator at W Band

Pulsed IMPATT oscillator at W Band is realized having peak output power of greater than 30W. The cavity of the pulsed IMPATT oscillator is designed and simulated based on the different diode parameters provided by the diode manufacturer. MOSFET based pulsed driver bias circuit is also designed for testing the cavity. The driver circuit is capable of driving a pulsed current of 30A with a duty cycle less than one percent. An output peak power of 32W is achieved at 91.93 GHz frequency using the optimally designed cavity and pulse driver circuit. The oscillator is tested with a duty cycle of 0.3% and pulse repetition frequency of 30 KHz. Variation of output power and frequency is studied with variation of bias pin length and back short position of the designed cavity. The diameter of the bias pin is optimized to get the desired output frequency. The chirp bandwidth of the designed oscillator is optimized by varying the slope of the biasing current pulse.
