Scanning Radar for Hazard Detection during Landing

Accurate and soft touchdown at a predetermined location necessitates the utilization of precise ground-based navigation sensors tailored for such destinations. Instruments like altimeters, velocimeters, and inertial navigation systems continually provide the status of the lander’s position. These sensors play a pivotal role in guiding the lander to the intended landing site. Furthermore, an essential element in achieving a soft landing is a terrain related hazard detection sensor during the final phase of descent. This sensor is crucial for ascertaining the safe grid location where the lander’s legs can be positioned securely, preventing toppling and enabling the successful deployment of rover. A comprehensive design for such a hazard-detecting radar system has been conceived, and its performance has been simulated and summarized in the research paper. The findings demonstrate that a G-band radar imager delivers exceptional resolution of less than 0.5 degrees across a field of view spanning 28 degrees. These outcomes identified the necessary technology for developing such radar systems.
