A kW-range Solid-State Power Amplifier Design for OTH Radar’s Transmitter Application.

This paper introduces a High Frequency (HF) band, kilowatt level, Continuous Wave (CW) power amplifier implemented in laterally-diffused metal oxide semiconductor (LDMOS) technology in a single board. It will be used in the transmitter section of Over The Horizon (OTH) Radar and is capable of operating in one of the possible OTH bands i.e. 22 MHz to 24 MHz. The configuration used here for design is Class-AB configuration that helped us achieve a Power Added Efficiency (PAE) of almost 66.5% at 975 W output power for a single stage. Two stages of this circuit, connected in a parallel configuration, will help us to achieve 1.95 kW of RF output, which will be one of the many unit-cells required for OTH transmitter. This novel design solves the problem of using bulky, tube-based RF signal amplifiers and also makes the system much more noise resilient, efficient and compact.
