Proposing a Simple Microwave Power Transfer System Using a Metallic Waveguide Lens and a Novel Magnetron Control Scheme

A wireless power transmission system is developed, which is capable of transmitting power as high as 700W, using microwave radiation at a frequency of 2.45 GHz. The system includes a conventional horn antenna transmitter and receiver and a metallic plate lens. The lens enables the antennas to be operated in their far field region without incurring a loss in power, thus increasing the operating distance of the system. The lens works by shaping the incident wave front to converge at a single point after passing through it. It is designed and simulated on CST Studio Suite and then fabricated, using sheet aluminium, making it lightweight and reducing its cost. A novel method to control the output power of the common cavity magnetron is also developed and tested. Using off the shelf cavity magnetron for microwave generation reduces the complexity and the cost of the system. The salient features of this system include extreme cost reduction, high power rating and portability. The transmission distance is kept 3m for testing purposes, but can be readily scaled up.
