A compact EBG integrated slot antenna for wearable applications

A compact EBG integrated antenna using a semi-flexible substrate RT 5800 is proposed for 2.45 GHz ISM band. The key techniques used for miniaturization is slots, slits and DGS. The overall size of the proposed antenna integrated with 3x3 array of EBG unit cell is 40x40x2.5 mm3. The impedance bandwidth of 100 MHz (2.41-2.51GHz) is obtained when simulated on tissue layer model in CST microwave studio. The realized gain in free space is 3.09 dBi with a radiation efficiency of 78% for the EBG integrated antenna. As compared to literature this work shows a compact EBG structure which is placed at shortest distance of 2 mm from the main antenna making it user comfortable. The proposed compact antenna is suitable for wearable applications as SAR levels comply with the safety limits.
