Design and Realization of Multi-Output, Ka-Band Frequency Synthesizer with High Output Power

This paper presents a Phased Locked Loop (PLL) based compact, dual output, high output power frequency synthesizer (FS) for generating local oscillator (LO) signals at 28.2GHz and 7.6GHz. Highly stable Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator (TCXO) is used for input reference signal (50MHz). The generated reference signal is further fed to frequency multiplier, band pass filter followed by a multi-chip drop-in module (DIM) to deliver high output power (1.31W) at desired frequency band. Multi-chip DIM comprises of MMIC frequency multiplier, band pass filter (BPF) and high power GaAs Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC) amplifier, which are accommodated in a single module with proper heat dissipation scheme. All the components are finally housed in a single package and measured. Measured results unveil output power of +31.2dBm at 28.2GHz with phase noise of −107.37dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset and +14.3dBm at 7.6GHz with phase noise of −121.45dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset. The realized frequency synthesizer can be used for astronomical applications as a LO source.
