Exploiting Time Domain Monostatic Backscatter Measurements for Gain Determination

A simplified method for estimating antenna gain from monostatic backscattering measurements is proposed in this paper. It is a straightforward and effective time domain approach that exploits the radar range equation and scattering parameters in the presence of a target with a known radar cross-section. This technique is unique in that no other antenna is required besides the one being tested. Furthermore, by exploiting time gating, it is shown that measurements may be performed in the near-field, allowing for a compact setup. The technique was successfully applied to determine the gain of an impulse radiating antenna. Comparison of the measured results to simulated data showed good agreement, with a standard deviation of 0.72 dB in the frequency range from 700 MHz to 3.08 GHz.
