A mmWave Phased Array for Joint Radar and Communication

To fulfill the capacity requirement of next-generation communication, the mmWave band is the center of attention and a mmWave phased array can provide the necessary flexibility in the hardware. Taking analogies from the monopulse radar concepts, we propose to use a mix of sum and difference patterns in a small planar phased array to collect the direction of arrival quickly. The proposed receiver architecture employs the fast beam-switching feature of the beamforming IC to enhance the unambiguous angular range of the array and thereby making it a promising candidate for joint radar and communication.
