The Effect of Anti-corrosion Agent on the Polarization of Rebar in Mortar Mixed by Seawater

Few liquid resources are used to make concrete more than freshwater. Due to freshwater shortages, some places will need a different substance. Indonesia has enough saltwater to make concrete with seawater instead of freshwater. However, its high chloride ion content may exacerbate reinforced concrete building corrosion. This study examined the effectiveness of applying bitumen-based paint on Portland Pozzolan cement (PCC)-bound seawater-mixed mortar to prevent corrosion. Steel and surface concrete coatings were applied to 15-by-15-by15-centimeter specimens for anticorrosion. These specimens were mounted on 3-and 5-centimeter mortar covers. The steel reinforcements were 12 mm in diameter. The concrete was treated by soaking it in seawater for 28 days. The dry-wet cycle, wet condition, and dry state were employed to model the corrosive environment. A half-cell potential (HCP) corrosion potential test was performed for 1.5 months. The specimens coated with steel and surface concrete exhibited a lower corrosion rate than the unprotected specimen. Reinforcing corrosion was higher on a 5-centimeter mortar cover than on a 3-centimeter one. Therefore, coating and concrete cover are effective ways to reduce steel reinforcement corrosion in concrete.
