Thermal Performance of Permanent Magnet Motor: Theoretical Investigation

The thermal model of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is investigated in this study using the lumped parameter thermal approach to calculate temperature variation at steady-state and transient conditions. The model's outputs are validated using experimental data from a 90 kW PMSM from a published study. The temperature variation of the motor components over time under various loads is investigated. The average steady-state temperatures of the end winding, stator teeth, stator yoke, rotor, and cooling water outlet are investigated across a wide range of time periods. In addition, the PMSM is overloaded, and the temperature is estimated using the mathematical model presented. The PMSM is tested by running it for 10 sec at maximum load and then turning it off for 10 sec. The proposed thermal model was constructed with the MATLAB code. The thermal characteristics of the motor are examined using simulation results.
