Performance Enhancement of SPMSM Under Finite Control Set Model Predictive Current Control

Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) is recognized as a straightforward and efficient control method for drives using permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM). It offers the advantage of rapid dynamic response, but it encounters challenges such as large torque, stator flux ripples, and high THD in phase current which mean unsatisfactory steady state performance because one voltage vector is applied during the whole control period. This article presents how to enhance the transient and steady-state performance of surface permanent magnet synchronous machine (SPMSM) by designing a modulated model predictive current control (M-MPCC). Improvement of transient performance is maintaining the performance of the SPMSM within maximum limits. The improvement in the steady-state performance includes torque, stator flux ripples, and THD in stator phase currents. M-MPCC, which applies one active voltage vector and one zero voltage vector in a control cycle, has better dynamic performance than C-MPCC. In the proposed M-MPCC, new six voltage vectors are introduced in addition to the main six active voltage vectors which increase the number of voltage vectors. The proposed method causes no computational burden more compared with C-MPCC. The proposed methods are evaluated via simulation results and compared with conventional model predictive current control (C-MPCC) for surface permanent magnet synchronous motors, and it is proved that the proposed method has a better steady-state performance while maintaining quick dynamic response within the maximum limits.
