Performance Analysis of Self-Excited Synchronous Reluctance Generator Under Intern-turn Faults

Synchronous reluctance generator SRG is one of the most cost-effective stand-alone generators compared to other types of generators due to its reliability and simplicity of construction. The reliability is due to the absence of rotor windings, permanent magnets, and brushes. The SRG’s Interturn short circuit faults ITSC present serious obstacles to the generator’s safe and dependable operation if left undetected during the early stages of development. This type of fault encompasses short-circuiting or open-circuiting of individual turns within the stator winding, leading to adverse consequences such as heating, mechanical stresses, and eventually culminating in ground faults. These issues can lead to significant consequences in terms of repair costs. In this paper, the model of Self Excited Synchronous Reluctance Generator SESRG is presented under inter-turn short circuit faults. The paper highlights fault mitigation to ensure the longevity of the generator. In addition to a comprehensive overview of the characteristics, detection methods, and mitigation strategies for inter-turn faults in SESRG.
