Saturated Iron Core Fault Current Limiter Allocation in Integrated Renewable Energy System

Saturated Iron Core Fault Current Limiters (SICFCLs) are crucial in modern power systems. New three-phase SICFCLs scheme has one iron core, compact size, less weight, and less DC source current; hence the scheme has advanced features such as cost savings and improved efficiency. It dynamically provides low impedance during normal operation and high impedance during faults, thereby enhancing power system safety and reliability through effective fault current control. This paper explores a compact, self-triggered, and fast-recovery three-phase Saturated Iron Core Fault Current Limiter (SICFCL). The study derives impedance-current relationship through finite element modeling (FEM) analysis in COMSOL Multiphysics software. Additionally, it investigates the influence of fault current limiters on power systems incorporating Renewable Energy Sources (RESs). Short-circuit current limitation is studied in the IEEE 9-Bus test network. Transient simulations across multiple scenarios demonstrate the impact and effectiveness of the new SICFCL in RES-integrated power systems.
