Boosting the Distribution Network Resilience via Microgrid Formation and Leveraging Emergency Demand Response Program and Tie-Lines

In recent years, the significant rise of high-impact, low-probability incidents can devastate parts of electrical distribution networks. Thus, improving the distribution networks’ resilience against inevitable natural disruptive events such as hurricanes has attracted much attention. Microgrid formation is considered a promising decision with the islanding operation of distributed renewable energy resources (DRERs) to enhance the system’s resiliency. This paper proposes a microgrid formation technique to improve the distribution networks’ resilience when a severe disruption occurs. The proposed method benefits from exploring the demand response program and Tie-lines. The primary objective is to minimize power losses, reduce load shedding, and minimize restoration costs while maintaining adherence to operational constraints. The best solution for the multi-objective problem is achieved by utilizing the darts game theory optimization method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated using the adapted IEEE 33-bus system under various fault test scenarios using MATLAB/Simulink environment.
