Design of the Optimized Quality of Natural Batik Dyes Based on Areca Catechu L Using Taguchi Multiresponse Method

This study aimed to obtain the best quality of natural batik dye derived from areca catechu I nut peel. One of the quality characteristics of natural batik dyes made from areca catechul is its fastness. Fastness can be determined based on the tannin content and absorbance of the solution. Some important identified factors that will affect the tannin content and absorbance of the solution are the weight of areca nut seeds (A), solvent volume (B), extraction temperature (C), and extraction time (D). By implementing the VIKOR-based Taguchi multi-response experimental design, the combination of factor levels that produced optimal quality was A3 (100 gr areca nut weight), B3 (1000 ml solvent volume), C3 (100°C extraction temperature), D3 (90 minutes extraction time). This optimal combination produced better results. Tannin concentration increased by 6.55 mg/Ior 6.85% (to 102.17 mg/I), and absorbance increased by 0.009 AU or up 3.33% (to 0.279 AU).
