Sustainable Community Development Amidst Challenges: A Holistic Examination of the Influence of Illegal Petroleum Mining in Aceh Province, Indonesia

This study aims to assess the repercussions of illicit petroleum mining in Aceh Province across social, environmental, economic, and health dimensions. Data from 245 respondents were collected through a questionnaire utilizing proportional random sampling. The results from Structural Equation Modeling suggest that illegal petroleum mining in Aceh has influenced sustainable community development. The allure of substantial financial gains from these activities has drawn widespread interest and participation, fueled by factors such as poverty, limited job opportunities, and a shift toward more consumptive and hedonistic lifestyles. Despite government authorities and local leaders exhibiting tolerance, this illicit mining operation, while potentially boosting the local economy, comes with detrimental effects on social, environmental, and health aspects. The persistence and quality of these dimensions will play a pivotal role in determining the future sustainability of community development performance, serving as a crucial foundation for human welfare in the years to come.
