Mitigation of Renewable Power Evacuation Constraints in Practical Utility Grid by Restricting Power Flow on the EHV AC Transmission Lines

The power flow constraints in a transmission system can be obviated by effective use of the flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS). This paper investigates the use of power flow control devices (PFCD) to mitigate solar power evacuation constraints associated with a 400 kV Substation. This is achieved by change in the reactance of the 220 kV transmission lines. A load flow study is performed considering all elements of the investigated transmission system and different values of reactance is computed which can be inserted in the line using a PFCD. Proposed PFCD considering the computed values of reactance are effective to restrict power flow on the transmission lines within permissible limits. Study is performed using MiPower software.
