Application of Golden Section Search Method in the Design of a Combined Muffler

This study aims to enhance the muffler's ability to reduce noise by adjusting design parameters of the muffler. The acoustic performance is expressed by the transmission loss (TL). The Taguchi method is coupled with COMSOL simulation to identify the best operating parameters against signal to noise ratio (S/N). Further, the 1D optimization Golden Section Search (GSS) method is used to optimize the external coupling tube length to enhance TL performance of the combined muffler (muffler
$\boldsymbol{\gamma}$
), which is composed by optimized reactive and dissipative muffle (mufflers
$\alpha$
and
$\boldsymbol{\beta}$
), respectively. It was discovered that the muffler
$\boldsymbol{\gamma}$
developed an excellent broadband attenuation performance, achieving a TL average of 76.66 dB, which represented a significant improvement compared to single muffler
$\boldsymbol{\alpha}$
and
$\boldsymbol{\beta}$
. The GSS method is helpful to find a combined muffler with better performance in TL average and SIN Ratio.
