A Case Study Using Failure Mode Effect Testing to Support the MIL-HDBK-516C Airworthiness Certification

Summary & Conclusions The case study is based upon Paragraph 7.2.4.1.4 Failure modes in Section 7 Propulsion and Propulsion Installations of MIL-HDBK-516C [1]. Paragraph 7.2.4.1.4 is studied in detail, and both a fail-operational scenario and a fail-safe scenario are discussed in this paper. Fault injection-based Failure Modes and Effects Testing (FMET) is applied to MIL-HDBK-516C Paragraph 7.2.4.1.4 as the Method of Compliance in this case study. Fault injection tests provide the verification and validation evidence for the MIL-HDBK-516C airworthiness certification that requirement-based testing alone cannot provide.
