Thermal Shutdown implementation in BLE microcontroller for TPMS and Industrial application

In industrial and automotive applications, such as process control in factories and tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS), a critical challenge arises due to the harsh operating conditions that often push device temperatures beyond the 125°C maximum threshold. These elevated temperatures pose a significant risk, potentially causing damage or rendering Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) micro controllers non-functional. To mitigate this issue, this paper presents a sequence and a cost-effective implementation for safe entry and exit from the shutdown mode to prevent thermal runaway effectively. Additionally, detailed explanations of the circuit-level implementation of a temperature sensor, reference voltage generator, and comparator are provided. Silicon data is collected to validate the proposed scheme, and the entire design is implemented and verified in the 65nm CMOS technology.
