Your Mobile Phone Could Infer Your College Major Tendency

College major affects peoples' future career paths and plans. Commonly, many students choose their major based on subjects they used to love in high school or peers and family recommendations; However, they might excel more in other majors they do not know related to their potential and skills. This paper proposes a new methodology for helping students choose their college major tendency based on their mobile phones metadata which complements traditional methods such as paper scales. The proposed model is based on various machine learning algorithms. It is low-cost, quick, automatic, and scalable. The data in this paper was collected from an 8-week study involving 30 participants. We find that: (1) Different phoneotypes features can help infer college major tendency; (2) the Phoneotype-based model obtained higher results capable of inferring college major tendency better than a demography-based model. This work offers an exciting prospect to advance our knowledge in helping prospective students identify their college major tendency, which would pave the way to attain the generations capable of achieving the fourth industrial revolution.
