Implementation of Cycloconverter for Speed Control of Induction Motor

A cycloconverter serves as a power electronics device designed to alter the frequency of the incoming power. Numerous scenarios necessitate variable frequency, with one notable application being variable speed drive setups. To enhance power quality in such instances, it becomes imperative to reduce the output voltage harmonics for the cycloconverter, quantified by the total harmonic distortion (THD). While several modulation techniques for switching exist to mitigate THD, their adoption can introduce complexities in both the gate driver and the overall hardware implementation. In this context, a modified topology of a single-phase to single-phase cycloconverter is introduced. This modification notably diminishes THD of the output voltage during specific frequency conversions one-third and one-fourth of the 50 Hz frequency, eliminating the necessity for intricate pulse width modulation techniques. Notably, this adjusted topology exhibits noteworthy THD performance, concurrently simplifying the complexity of circuit for gate driver in comparison to existing circuits. Validation of these results is conducted through MATLAB Simulink simulations.
