Review of Interruption Control Technologies for Cascading Faults in Power Systems

The cascading fault problem is one of the main causes of large-scale power outages, which can result in substantial economic losses and social influence. Therefore, investigating interruption control technologies for cascading faults is of great practical significance to ensure power systems’ safe and stable operation. This paper reviews the typical cascading fault models of the power system using self-organized criticality theory, where the new power system’s network architecture from the cyber physics perspective is analyzed. Considering preventive control, correction control, and coordinated control, the interruption control strategies of power system cascading faults are sorted out, and the advantages and disadvantages of these various controls are compared. Furthermore, the multi-stage blocking control methods are emphatically discussed in light of the transmission line’s outage probability model. Finally, the future development direction and potential means for addressing the power system cascading faults are prospected.
