Z-Source Inverter Fed e-Drive System for Electric Vehicle Application

This paper presents the performance analysis of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) controlled via Z-Source Inverter (ZSI) for the implementation in electric traction drive system (ETDS) by employing Direct Torque Control (DTC) technique. Compare to other electric motors PMSM has fast dynamic characteristics, better torque realization and smooth speed response. As for ZSI, it has a number of inherent advantages including optimal switches, shoot through states, step up and step-down voltage, high efficiency and cheap cost makes it very propitious for systems. In line of advantage, this paper has a closed loop operation for ZSI allows to sustain a constant voltage across the inverter input. Using DTC technique for ZSI based PMSM has effectively reduced the ripples in torque, speed and stator current and easier to implement. Furthermore, the model has been tested for 4-Quadrant operation. PMSM used here has a rating of 3.1kW and 10A. Results obtained from multi quadrant operation are quite effective as it has shown compelling solution for battery charging during braking region through MATLAB simulation.
