An Improved Cache Eviction Strategy: Combining Least Recently Used and Least Frequently Used Policies

Cache eviction algorithms play a critical role in the performance of a cache system. In our hybrid approach, each item in the cache LRU and LFU has a counter. The counter tracks the frequency of accesses to the item in the cache. When the counter exceeds a certain threshold, the item is moved from the LRU cache to the LFU cache with a time-to-live parameter. The time-to-live parameter specifies the amount of time that the item will remain in the LFU cache before being evicted from the cache altogether. The idea behind this approach is to use the LRU cache to store frequently accessed items that have been accessed recently, while the LFU cache is used to store less frequently accessed items that are still important to keep in the cache. By using the counter to track the frequency of accesses to each item, we can dynamically adjust the placement of items in the cache to optimize cache hit rates and eviction rates. Our simulations show that this hybrid LRU-LFU eviction policy consistently outperforms both LRU and LFU individually in a variety of scenarios, making it a promising solution for optimizing cache performance in various contexts.
