5.8GHz ISM Band Low Cost Button Antenna for Smart Wearable Application

A low-cost button antenna for smart wearable applications using a probe feed technique operating at 5.8 GHz is proposed in this paper. Antennas used for wearable wireless communication and biomedical RF systems must be feather-light. The antenna is designed to be compact and efficient, with a radiation pattern that minimizes the effects on the user’s body. The design is optimized with ANSYS HFSS software to achieve the needed performance parameters. The designed antenna with patch radius 8.5mm operates at frequency 5.83 GHz with S11=-20.59dB. The gain directivity obtained is 4.0dB, gain obtained is 1.7dB, Bandwidth 315MHz which is quite good for wearable applications, with SAR 1.21W/Kg which is within FCC limit. The base material used is low cost FR4 epoxy having 4.4 relative permittivity and 0.16cm height. Copper is utilized as conductive stuff. The final antenna design is fabricated and tested to corroborate its performance and the results prove that the fabricated antenna meets the needed specifications. The compact size and efficient performance make the antenna suitable for use in a wide range of smart wearables, including smartwatches, fitness trackers and health monitoring bias, operating in the 5.8 GHz ISM band designed using FR4 material.
