Manchester coded data transmission over single core cable for Bathythermograph applications

The study of the ocean is an essential aspect from strategic, economic and ocean engineering point of view. Conductivity Temperature Depth (CTD) is used to measure the ocean temperature and depth for scientific surveys, environment monitoring and military oceanography. It is a common device that is used for ocean studies to get a record of the temperature of the ocean. The CTD is now replaced by the expendable bathythermograph (XBT). The new generation bathythermograph consists of an underwater unit, which is the remote unit and a receiver unit, which is the onboard unit. The underwater unit and the onboard receiver are communicated through a long 2000m cable. The Data communication employs different encoding techniques for data security and transmission speed. This paper explains how Manchester coding aids in loss-less data transmission across straight cables over 2000m up to 1200 bauds.
