SVC-Based Frequency Compensation with Empirical System Modeling and Bode Loop Shaping

Increased inverter-based Renewable Energy Source (RES) penetration has led to frequency regulation challenges in some power systems due to decreased inertia. FACTS devices such as SVCs have been shown to be effective in damping small-signal frequency oscillations in systems with high renewable energy penetrations. This paper proposes a novel control scheme for a SVC that utilizes a synchrophasor as the primary frequency sensor to regulate system voltage and frequency simultaneously. Empirical system modeling is used to identify oscillatory system modes to ease deployment complexity, and basic control principles are used to design a simple and effective control law that provides good damping at the system modes. The simulated system, using the novel SVC-based frequency regulator, reduces the frequency oscillation at the dominant mode by a factor of nearly $40 dB$ compared to the system without it.
