Examining the Impact of Software Engineering Problem-Based Learning on Student Performance

Introducing a fresh perspective to address challenges in software engineering courses, this paper unveils the Software Engineering Problem-Based Learning (SEPBL) approach as an innovative solution. Recognizing the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, SEPBL aims to cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills among students. To evaluate its effectiveness, a survey was conducted to gather feedback from students, and their grades were compared with those of traditional teaching methods. The study also delved into how SEPBL impacted Assurance of Learning (AOL) in achieving Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). The findings showcase a remarkable level of student satisfaction with the SEPBL approach, surpassing the appeal of traditional methods. Moreover, implementing SEPBL resulted in improved student grades and significantly enhanced performance in SLOs aligned with the SEPBL framework. In conclusion, the Software Engineering Problem-Based Learning approach emerges as a promising pathway to enrich the learning process in software engineering courses. By fostering practical application and enhancing critical skills, SEPBL paves the way for a more engaging and effective educational experience, with profound implications for student achievement and learning outcomes.
