Protocols, Platforms and Case Studies for IoT and Industrial IoT

System integration for IoT and Smart Home, IoT, and Industrial IoT (IIoT) accompany humanity comprehensively as support in the age of progressive digitization of work processes and human work processes, especially in modern industries and in the private sector (so-called Smart Home). In this work, certain resulting problems are examined in more detail. The focus is on a brief overview of the required protocols and platforms and discussing practical aspects such as economic viability, energy efficiency, easier configuration and management, and advanced cybersecurity. These include practical problems of network and IoT component compatibility and cloud dependencies in fog-cloud cooperation. The authors favor open-source and cloud-free solutions and present various case studies with smart applications. In the medium term, 5G mMTC-based scenarios will become increasingly important.
