Adaptive Middleware Solutions for Seamless Integration of Legacy and Modern ICT Systems in Smart Grids

The evolution of the energy grid into a smart grid requires integration of legacy Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems with modern infrastructure. Such integration poses significant challenges due to heterogeneity, interoperability, and scalability issues. This research paper delves into adaptive middleware solutions that bridge the gap between these two paradigms, ensuring a seamless fusion in smart grid environments. Employing a modular design, the proposed middleware adapts to dynamic grid conditions, aligning data communication protocols of traditional and state-of-the-art systems. The paper also introduces a robust performance metric suite, used to evaluate the efficiency, latency, and reliability of the proposed solution under various scenarios. Empirical results manifest that the adaptive middleware not only preserves the functional integrity of integrated systems but also enhances the overall responsiveness and resilience of smart grids.
